Turtle Nest Relocation

As part of our ongoing efforts to support the local wildlife, Almanara works with Diani Turtle Watch a program which is part of Local Ocean Conservation which aims to protect the indigenous Sea Turtles along our coastline. Diani Turtle Watch has a team of 14 Turtle Monitors who cover the area from Waa to Funzi Island (+50km). The two main species that we have in the area are Green Turtles (Chelonia Mydas) and Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys Imbricata).

The team works late nights and early mornings looking out for evidence of nesting sites and stranded turtles. Over recent years due to increased human activity, the Turtle nests have been laid either to close to the surface, or in an area that is not well protected from people. Almanara has allocated a portion of our private beach to be used as nest relocation site. When the team finds a nest that is not adequate, they relocate the eggs to our site which is monitored and protected until the eggs are ready to hatch. Working with the conservation team we have been able to ensure the safe hatching of hundreds of baby Turtles each year.
